THE POSITION OF ANTALYA AND TURKEY IN THE WORLD

General Situation
Turkey is a peninsular country surrounded on three sides by sea which, because of its geographical position on the Eastern Mediterranean, links Asia with Europe and which has an area of 774,815 kmē and a population of 65 million. Its most important world-famous cities are Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Mersin, Adana and Bursa. The country is governed by a democratic parliamentary regime and its capital is Ankara. Antalya is a city on Turkey's southwestern Mediterranean coast with an area of 20,591 kmē which, because of its temperate climate, natural beauty and historical wealth, is a leading tourism center and port.

ANTALYA FREE TRADE ZONE
Founded in the port area 12 km from Antalya's city center and 25 km from the airport in an area of 580,000 kmē, the Antalya Free Zone entered service in 1987. Financing of the land and infrastructure was met by the state, the superstructure was developed by the investing companies and the management of the Antalya Free Trade Zone was handed over to the private sector. With its completed electricity, water, telecommunication and refining facilities, roads and green areas, it is at a level where it can complete with fully-developed free zones.

Connection to the seaways
In addition to a wharf with a depth of 10 m. and 218 m. in length within the boundaries of the Antalya Free Trade Zone, it serves the region by linking it to the seaways via the immediately adjacent wharves of the port of Antalya.

Areas of Activity in the Zone
Production:
All types of production activity which do not damage the environment, with priority to electronics, optics and ready-to-wear clothing and trade, storage, marking, packing, labeling, exhibition and maintenance-repair of production-related raw materials and semi-processed goods.
Trade:
The trade, storage, labeling, packaging and exhibition of any commercial commodity.
Storage:
Storage of goods of users or non-users and other persons or establishments.
Assembly-Disassembly:
The Assembly and disassembly of all types of goods.
Maintenance-Repair:
Maintenance or repair of all types of goods.
Rentals:
Rentals of enclosed areas and work-sites to other users.
Others:
Services in fields such as banking, insurance, engineering, consultancy, transportation and representation.

Advantages and incentives of the Antalya Free Zone:

  1. The Free Trade Zone is deemed to be outside the customs borders. Legislative provisions pertaining to taxes, levies, duties, customs and foreign exchange obligations are not applicable. During the investment and production phases, operating foundations and users can benefit from the incentives determined by the Council of Ministers. Income and revenues generated in the free zones through activities of real persons and legal entities with full or limited tax liability in Turkey are exempt from income or corporate taxes provided that the transfer of such income and revenues to other parts of Turkey is documented pursuant to foreign exchange regulations.
  2. Companies operating in the free zone may be 100 percent Turkish-owned companies or companies which are foreign-owned to the same degree.
  3. All types of infrastructure have been completed in the free zone and these are comparable with infrastructure in developed countries.
  4. Bureaucracy and red tape is minimized in the free zone and operation by the private sector is preferred.
  5. Unlike free zones in many countries, goods produced in the Antalya Free Zone may be offered for sale on Turkey's domestic market.
  6. Currency valid in the free zone consist of convertible foreign currencies accepted by the Central Bank of the Turkish Republic.
  7. Strikes and lockouts are forbidden in the free zone for a period of ten years from its opening.
  8. Rents are very low plots of land with ready-completed infrastructure.
  9. Our free zone has a leading place in the European Community and Middle Eastern markets. Many Turkish industrial goods can enter the European Union with zero customs duty. Moreover, from the zone it is easy to arrange transportation to the port, the highway network, and centers of culture, tourism, pleasure and recreation.
  10. In the free zone there is no restriction on barter-trade.
  11. The maximum period of an operating license may be extended up to 99 years.
  12. In the free zone, provisions of the Municipal Law, the Foreign Investment Law and the Passport Law as well as many other laws which are contrary to the Free Zones Law will not be applicable.

Method of Application to Operate
In order to operate in the Antalya Free Zone, it is necessary to take out an Operating License. Application formalities may be completed by obtaining and Operating License Application Form from the Free Zone Directorate, completing it and returning it to the Directorate.
